We're standing at the cusp of the biggest technological shift in human history. Just as the internet transformed how we work, communicate, and live over the past 30 years, artificial intelligence is about to reshape everything again – but this time, the changes will happen much faster and go much deeper.
And yet, when I talk to people, I mostly hear worry. Anxiety. Panic.
It’s like we’re all living inside Mission: Impossible—except the threat isn’t Tom Cruise jumping from the ceiling, it’s AI taking your job before lunch.

Personal Experience: I have lived through 4 major technological shifts myself (Mainframes → Personal Computing, The Internet Revolution, Installed Software → Software As A Service, The Mobile Revolution).
Trust me, each time, it felt like the old world was collapsing. Each time, it felt like jobs were disappearing and everything was uncertain. But every time, something beautiful happened on the other side: more jobs, more innovation, more possibilities.
Here's the thing: every major technological revolution has created more opportunities than it destroyed, even though the transition period always feels uncertain. Take a look at the chart below for yourself.
Why This Time Feels Different (And Scary)
Technology accelerates at an exponential pace whereas the human brain is designed to think linearly. This psychological mismatch makes it feel like things moving exponentially are spiraling out of our control, when in reality that's just the natural pace of progress in our modern world.
Now add another twist: AI is a compounding force. If AI can write code, and that code builds better AI, we’re in a feedback loop unlike anything we’ve seen before. It’s not just the pace of change—it’s the acceleration of that pace.
This transformation is bigger than what you can comprehend in your wildest dreams. We’re not upgrading the tools. We’re changing the nature of work itself.
The Reality Check: AI is advancing at a rate that compresses what used to take decades of change into just a few years. This isn't your typical technological upgrade – it's a fundamental shift in how work gets done.
What's Going to Happen to Jobs?
That's the million-dollar question bothering everyone I talk to – so let's tackle it head-on.
To answer this, I looked backwards at innovations that were radical for their times and fundamentally changed how people conducted their personal and professional lives: Steam Engine, Printing Press, Motor Vehicles, Radio, Television, Mainframes, Personal Computing, Mobile Phones.
Each of these innovations led to significant changes in the nature of prevailing jobs. For example, calligrapher as a profession was eliminated by the Printing Press, and factory jobs common during the industrial revolution were replaced by desk jobs in the Personal Computing era.
However, they all brought more prosperity and more jobs in return. AI will do the same. But the nature of these new jobs will look very different. Here's what I foresee happening:
1. The Rise of Super-Generalists: Multiple Job Functions Merge
AI's ability to generate all kinds of content – images, videos, text, code – has proven it's not just good at creative functions, but often better and faster than humans. This means traditional creative roles will shrink significantly in the short term and become obsolete in the longer term.
However, humans in these roles do more than deliver creative output – they participate in hierarchies focused on customer success, an intangible that AI cannot easily replicate. Additionally, AI makes it easier for creative people to operate in adjacent fields (a UX designer can now generate working code, a software engineer can create marketing content).
The result: The rise of generalists who are responsible for customer success but handle multiple functions in that pursuit. Teams will be smaller, leaner, and include AI agents as key members.
2. Complex Problem Solving: New High-Tech Opportunities
Many problems fundamental to unlocking higher quality of life – molecular biology, nanotechnology, advanced materials, climate modeling – have remained unsolved due to their complexity and computational requirements.
As AI agents handle routine software development, human coders will be freed up to tackle previously impossible challenges. This will create entirely new categories of high-tech jobs requiring deep expertise in biology, material science, computer science fundamentals, and mathematical modeling, along with AI fluency.
Examples: AI-assisted drug discovery, nano-scale manufacturing, climate engineering, space exploration technologies.
3. The Micro-Application Revolution: Tech For The Long Tail
Many small but real problems haven't been solved with technology because building software requires expensive professionals. Only problems with ROI exceeding development costs were viable.
AI agents generating code will democratize software creation – with English as the primary instruction language, building software will become as easy as writing with pen and paper. This drastically reduces costs and enables highly personalized applications.
Examples: Your neighborhood store building custom inventory management, real-time personalized app features generated on-demand, micro-solutions for niche communities. A fitness coach can build a client-tracking app without writing a single line of code.
Learning from History: Why Optimism is Justified
Every wave of technological change initially creates anxiety, but ultimately makes life better in the long run. It creates more jobs, increases economic activity, and improves quality of life – even though the transition period requires learning new skills and adapting to change.
But the pattern is clear:
Looking back, would you trade the present for the past? Did we lose something in the process? Sure. But we gained far more. Life got better.
The key insight: While you're experiencing the change, it always feels disruptive and uncertain. But once you've adapted, you can't imagine going back to the old way of doing things.
Consider this: In the 1980s, bank tellers were terrified that ATMs would eliminate their jobs entirely. Banks had over 600,000 tellers, and ATMs seemed like the perfect replacement – they could dispense cash 24/7 without breaks, sick days, or salaries. Many tellers thought their careers were over.
What actually happened? The number of bank tellers increased. ATMs made banking so much more convenient and affordable that banks opened thousands of new branches. More importantly, tellers evolved from simple cash-dispensing machines into financial advisors, loan specialists, and customer relationship managers. The job became more interesting, higher-skilled, and better-paid. Today, there are more people working in banking than ever before, doing work that's far more valuable than just counting money.
The Exponential Advantage
What makes this transition even more exciting is the compounding effect. Unlike previous revolutions where tools remained relatively static once developed, AI tools continuously improve and can create better versions of themselves.
This means the rate of opportunity creation will accelerate over time. Each breakthrough enables multiple new breakthroughs, creating a positive feedback loop of innovation and job creation that will dwarf anything we've seen in human history.
Embracing the Greatest Opportunity
The same positivity we feel about past technological advances should guide how we look at AI. Yes, the transition will require effort and adaptation. Yes, you'll need to learn new skills. But the opportunities that emerge will be greater than what we're leaving behind.
